Symmetry with Post-its

Description: I teach Geometry (high school) and every year I do a hands on activity with 3" Post-it® Notes. My students take a post-it note and fold it a minimum of 2 times to maintain a square. Using scissors they randomly cut the post-it to make symmetrical snowflakes. We use all different colors of post-it notes and then hang the snowflakes from the ceiling using dental floss so there is a blizzard in our classroom. The great thing about using post-it notes is that each snowflake is guaranteed to be symmetrical because they are "pre-cut" i.e. the students do not have to cut 3" squares. Any "square" post-its could be used but it is advised to use at least the 3x3

A Book About Me

Description: My students are making their own books about themselves, under my supervision, as the school social worker. Each child has his own small pad of Post-it® Notes and when he/she completes a page that will eventually go in the special book, they can write what category the page falls under...family, school, hobbies, etc. and that page, and others like it go in to their personal folder. As they accumulate pages, they can readily find which pages go in which sections of the book, and take those sections out as we work on them further...using art work, stickers, pictures, etc. The kids love the Post-it notes, and I try to give them the color they want, but usually can't afford to buy as many as we need.

Note Taking During Reading

Description: Kids love to use Post-it® Notes for note taking during reading. To encourage this skill at the beginning of the year I cover a bulletin board in blank Post-it Notes spelling out the word read. As the kids need a Post-it Note they can come take one off the wall - when it is empty they can choose a new word to spell out on the board with blank Post-it Notes!

Description: We use Post-it® Notes for creative writing. Students put their ideas for the beginning, middle, and end on the Post-its and then add ideas for details with different color Post-its. Each child shares their Post-it story with another student before they begin their writing process. The other student has the option of suggesting more ideas with another color of Post-it. Students love writing this way. They love the bright colors that Post-its come in. It helps them form a story map in their head before they start writing.
