Speech Bubble Post-it® Notes

Description: I let the kids draw two people doing something on an 8X10 paper. I give them 2 speech bubble Post-it® Notes to place by each figure's head. I ask them to write something in each bubble so I can see what the two people are saying in their picture. It encourages conversation in their writing. This can be done in any subject and at any grade level. The speech bubbles will let you know if they understand the assignment given.

Ambassadors to the World

Description: Students design and decorate with Post-it® Notes a journal, travel bag and stuffed animal to travel around the world, sending back emails and a journal filled with experiences. Students will track the movement the best they can, based on emails, of their ambassador.

Writing Magnetic Leads

Description: Go to the school library to obtain several examples of different leads from various novels. Write these leads on the Post-it® Easel paper. Review each type with the students, have them identify the different types of leads in the current novels they are currently reading. Write the leads on Post-it® Notes so they can match them to the leads on the larger anchor Post-it Easel paper. Send students back to their desks so that they can update a current piece of writing using one of the leads discussed in the focus lesson. Have several students share/compare their first lead with the second. Then use the revised leads as a bulletin board activity. Create a large copy of a magnet and have students use copies of the shapes of items that a magnet attracts. For example, write one of the leads on a nail shaped piece of paper. Use a piece of yarn to emulate the magnetic force that would attract it from the magnet to the revised lead. Do this to only several of the writing pieces. The title of the bulletin board would be Magnet Leads.

Description: My students use Post-it® Notes to contribute to the Concept/Question board. Their contribution is about a story from the monthly theme. Using color coordinated Post-it Notes make is especially easy for English Learners to comprehend the difference between a concept and a question.

Description: Divide a sentence into beginning-middle-end for younger students or noun-verb-noun for older. Put each part on different colored Post-it® Notes. Mix and match to make new sentences, noticing the different parts of speech.
