Estimated Time: 60+ minutes

Description: Distribute diff. colored Post-it® Notes to students in class (the colors match with sections from the current chapter that they will take notes from). When the notes are completed, the matching colored post-it notes team up to compare notes and create a visual aid on poster paper using their notes.(typically there are 5 students with matching colors) They then present their notes to the class. This helps the students get the information without having to read the entire chapter.

Estimated Time: 30-40 minutes

Description: For background reading, the class is split into small groups. Each group of 2-4 has specific areas to read. They use STICKIES to mark the main ideas. Then they list details on the STICKIES. These have to be words and phrases. Then each group must share their information with the rest of the class, talking only from the STICKY NOTES. All of the students get all of the information and no one has to read the entire selection(s). Reading skills are taught and reinforced as main ideas and supporting details are the goal here. At the end, the STICKIES are placed in sequence on a board so the students can refer to them as sneeded throughout the unit. This activity makes reading in the content area an integral part of learning while fulfilling the standards set forth for reading.
