I select the notes and see if I can match the note to the student. I then make up 4 Post-it® Notes about me, 3 with facts that are false or only partly true and one that is completely true. They then have to guess which is correct. Great ice breaker activity!

Categories: 4th Grade | 5th Grade | 6th Grade | History | Science
Estimated Time: 60+ minutes
Description: Divide class into groups of 3-4 students. Students use books, encyclopedias and the internet to research an assigned natural disaster. Using the information they gather, students create a power point presentation about their natural disaster. To further enhance the lesson, students then plot recent occurrences of their selected natural disaster on the map (ie., current volcanic activity in Iceland). Assign each group a color of Post-it® Notes and have students write details of the disaster, such as date of occurrence, magnitude, longitude/latitude, etc. Afterward, students examine trends of naturally occurring events (ie., events that occur along similar fault-lines). By using Post-it notes, students can enhance their learning of natural disasters and current events by writing about the event on the Post-it. By using different colored Post-it notes, the students can quickly see trends in type of disaster and look for patterns.

Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
Description: Since vocabulary is an essential part of our comprehensive literacy program, we focus on Tier II and III words to expand our students vocabulary. After we have gone over our 10-15 new words a week, I have the students write the words on one sticky note, the parts of speech on a different color sticky note, and a short kid friendly definition or sample sentence on the another colored sticky note. Then the previous week, we review these words by having a scavenger hunt. I might say look for the word "elated". Then I will say hunt for the part of speech, then find the definition. The kids love this and usually have worked at using the words in the previous week to really understand their meaning. The team that locates the most words, definitions, or part of speech is the winner.
