Description:
Students will act out the process of pollen moving from the anther to the stigma of flowers. Students will be assigned the roles of flowers or pollen movers. The pollen will be represented by yellow Post-it® Flags and the flower petals, which attract the pollen movers, will be represented by tropical Post-it® Notes.
Instructions:
Step 1: Some students will be assigned the role of flowers. Several other students will be assigned the role of a butterfly, bee, hummingbird, or other pollen mover. All students will wear a Post-it name badge so other students recognize each other.
Step 2: The students role-playing flowers will be given tropical Post-it notes to place on their bodies to represent flower petals. The "flowers" will also be given yellow Post-it flags to place on their hands representing pollen on the anther of the flower.
Step 3: The students acting as flowers will raise their arms while the pollen movers "fly" around the flowers collecting pollen.
Step 4: After moving about the room for a bit, the pollen movers will return to the flowers gently depositing the pollen on the heads of the flowers - the stigma of the flower.
Step 5: Students will repeat the process giving all students a chance to role play a flower and a pollen mover.
Afterwards:
Objective: Students will be able to list several ways pollen is transported from the anther to the stamen of a flower.
Lesson Extensions: Lesson can be extended by discussing other pollen movers such as wind and humans. Students can design their own role play demonstrating these processes.
Supporting All Learners: All students will be able to participate in this lesson regardless of academic or physical ability.
Assignment/Home Connection: Students should locate real flowers, weather permitting, and examine them to find the pollen, anther, and stamen. If this activity is completed during a season when flowers are not available students can draw pictures of flowers labeling the correct parts including a pollen mover in the picture.
