Estimated Time: 20-30 minutes

Materials Needed: Post-it® Specialty Die Cut Notes, Arrow Shape (7350-CAMX), Post-it® Flags 1/2 inch, Arrows (684-ARR3), Bulletin Board with the moon at the top, decorated with stars throughout.

Materials Needed:

  • Post-it® Specialty Die Cut Notes
  • Arrow Shape (7350-CAMX)
  • Post-it® Flags 1/2 inch
  • Arrows (684-ARR3)
  • Bulletin Board with the moon at the top
  • decorated with stars throughout.

Description:

While reading a story, students use ‘rocket’ shaped arrow flags to mark at least 6 vocabulary words, WOW words, or words they may not know. Students then share their words, use them in their writing, or learn new words to fly to the moon. This means that their names are on a bulletin board. Students get points for each exciting wow word or vocabulary word they find. If students achieve 20 points in one month, they reach the moon and earn prizes or extra recess time. Students love using the Post-it® products and almost always reach their goals.

Instructions:

Step 1: Teach students new vocabulary words each week.

Step 2: Students look for vocabulary words in the context of stories, core text, video or use the words in their own writing.

Step 3: Teacher gives praise and feedback on the use of vocabulary words, especially if used correctly in their writing. I may even give double points if I think that the student gave extra effort!

Step 4: Move the arrow shaped Post-it (student's rocket) towards the moon!

Step 5: Award prizes each month for all students who reach their goal of 20 points.

Afterwards:

Objective: The main objective is to increase student vocabulary. Students use their wow words (like exclaimed instead of said) or new vocabulary often.

Supporting All Learners: All students can earn points and feel successful with this ongoing project!
