Description:
At the end of the year we write warm fuzzies to each person in the class on post-it notes and I make them into a card for the students to take home on the last day of school.
Instructions:
Step 1: I have each student pick out a piece of construction paper and a smaller copied paper that says my name, the school, year, grade, and school name, there is also a place for the student to write his/her own name. The students fold the construction paper hamburger style and glue the label on the front. I have them glue it near the top of the card so I can glue a picture on the front later for them. I give each student about 20 sticky tabs. It\'s more visually interesting if students have different shapes and colors.
Step 2: I have one student go out in the hallway where I have left a pile of books. While that student is out of the room, I have student list off positive adjectives that describe the student in the hallway. Some examples include: honest, generous, helpful, active, hilarious, and cheerful. Then I put on a timer and for 3 minutes we fill our sticky tabs writing a tiny letter with compliments on it to the person in the hallway. If a student finishes early, they decorate with their colored pencils. After three minutes I take that student\'s card around and collect everyone\'s warm fuzzies.
Step 3: This is repeated for each student in the class. I am the last person we make a card for. I assign the various jobs to responsible students and I sit in the hallway until it is done. This takes at least two full mornings but I think it is well worth the time spent. Each little compliment warms the heart. When the cards have all been written, I strategically place the sticky tabs so they are all visible inside the card and then I laminate them (otherwise the sticky tabs would fall off). This activity gives my class the closure we so need at the end of the year. I have always done this activity at the end of the year, no matter what grade, from 1st through 5th grade. When I pass out the cards on the last day of school, everyone reads them with smiles on their faces and says thank you to each person as they read their compliments.
