Materials Needed:

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 3 x 3
  • Neon 6 Pads (654-6SSAN)
  • poster paper to display sticky poem with drawing

Description:

Students draw a scene, or a picture of a selected theme. I teach students about nouns and adjectives. Then with pictures displayed, all students walk around with a pad of sticky notes. They write one or more words on a sticky and put it on or by the picture. After everyone has left a sticky on all the pictures, each student collects their picture with all the sticky notes. They rearrange their sticky notes to form a poem.

Instructions:

Step 1: Draw a poem or scene of a selected theme.

Step 2: Review nouns and adjectives. Everyone displays their pictures, and gets a pad of stickies.

Step 3: Walk around to each picture displayed with your sticky pad. Write one or more words to describe or tell about each picture. Leave one sticky on each picture with the description.

Step 4: Each person gets their own picture with all the sticky notes from the other students.

Step 5: Rearrange the sticky notes into a poem about your artwork.

Afterwards:

Objective: Students are introduced and encouraged to write poetry. Integrates art, writing, and reading.

Lesson Extensions: Students write their own poem about a piece of artwork.

Supporting All Learners: Students work in partners so struggling readers can have support. Students who have difficulty writing just need to rearrange the stickies.

Assignment/Home Connection: Students can have family members do the same at home--write a description on stickies about the child's picture. Then each family member can rearrange the notes into the poem of their choice.
