Description:
Have each student draw a part of an Amercian President’s face on a Post-it® Note, for example: just the eye and eybrow of Lincoln’s face. They will print a picture out and bring it to class after researching which President they want to draw. Then the Post-it notes will be randomly handed out and placed on a 12×18 piece of white paper where it would make sense for it to be: if it was a picture of the nose it would be placed in the middle of the paper. Then the new owner of this Post-it would have to draw the remainder of the President’s face. I would have pictures for them to look at. They would need to use proportion correctly when drawing the faces.
Instructions:
Step 1: Each student will research an American President that they would like to draw and will then print a picture of him to bring to class. They need to write these facts on the back of their sheet: His birthplace, home state, favorite food (if any)and how many children he had.
Step 2: Students will be given a 3"x3" view finder to place over the picture that they brought in and will decide what section of the President\'s face they will draw on their 3\"x3\" Post-it note. Then they will draw that section of his face on the Post-it and color it with colored pencils.
Step 3: After this is completed the Post-it notes will be turned in and then randomly handed out to the students. The students will be given a 12\"x18\" piece of white paper.
Step 4: The students will place the Post-it note on their white paper where it would make sense for that part of the face to be.
Step 5: Now the students will draw a picture of the President that they chose around the Post-it notes that they were given. Then they will color it with colored pencils. They will need to remember how to draw a person\'s face with correct proportions. Their President\'s face will be mixed up with another President\'s face part.
Step 6: Pictures of all the Presidents will be put on display. Students will then be given another Post-it note and will try to guess what two President\'s are in a picture. They need to write their name on their Post-it. When they have written the names down they will then post their Post-it notes around the picture they were guessing on. The teacher would then read the guesses and announce who guessed correctly and the facts on the back of the sheets that the students filled in when they researched their Presidents.
Afterwards:
Objective: 1. To express ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. 2. To use proportion correctly. 3. To gain a better understanding of our former Presidents.
Lesson Extensions: Students could be put into groups of four. They could choose a President and split his face into four equal sections. Each student would draw their section of his face onto a 3\"x3\" Post-it note and then they would stick all the Post-it notes together on a piece of paper to form one face.
Supporting All Learners: Some students with special needs may need to use a light box to trace their President\'s face.
Assignment/Home Connection: The students will be doing the research on their Presidents at home.
