Description:

I have my students use Post-it® notes to make connections. A different color represents a different connection: pink is text-text, yellow is text-self, etc. Then we post them on the wall to be able to visually see how many connections they can actually make throughout the year, and share with others. Making connections helps students better comprehend, experience, and remember! We also try to use different shapes for correlating stories.

Instructions:

Step 1: Previewing a story, students see if they can make a connection. If they can, they write it on a post-it note. Pink for text-text, yellow for text-self, blue for text-world, and green for text-media.

Step 2: Students continue their connection post-its while reading, and after reading. Then they should have at least three post-its of a time line of beginning, middle, and end while they were actively reading.

Step 3: Then we share and post the post-it connections (with initials on each one) under the correct column on the wall.

Afterwards:

Objective: To have students activiate prior knowledge, make connections, use and retain information, and comprehend what they are reading.

Lesson Extensions: Students are able to use one of their text connections as a seed for their writing assignment. Write more about the time you........or the movie.......

Supporting All Learners: ELL learners can illustrate pictures, label, or copy words out of the book.

Assignment/Home Connection: Soemtimes we will send home a postcard of the story we were reading, or a letter to the parents of the story we had been reading. More often, we fill out a graphic organizer for the student to share at home.
