Description:

This activity teaches sentence structure by learning diagramming sentences with Post-it® Notes.

Instructions:

Step 1: Tell the students that a sentence structure must have a subject (noun or pronoun) and predicate (verb). The rest of words help to describe more information about the subject or predicate.

Step 2: The students will be able to diagram the parts of a sentence using Post-it Notes to become better writers.

Step 3: Write the following sentence on the Post-it® Easel Pad: The teacher played the piano. The teacher will draw a line and dissect it in the middle on the board or smart board.

Step 4: Start the sentence with a simple subject and predicate using two color Post-it Notes. Next, modifiers are articles a, an, and the and are placed on a diagonal line under the noun they modify.

Step 5: Tell the students that a Direct Object (thing or person that gets the action of the verb) is on the same horizontal line as the subject and verb. Direct Object separated by the verb by a short vertical line.

Step 6: Tell the students to make their own Post-it Note Diagramming sentences using: subject, predicate, direct object and modifiers. The boy ate the hamburger. The child spilled the milk.
