Description:
Using a during reading strategy called New/Knew/Q while reading expository or non-fiction text, students while reading use Post-it® Notes (small ones) to designate within the text they are reading what information they knew already, what information is new and what questions popped into their heads while reading. Students write new on the Post-it Note and place the small Post-it Notes within the text to mark etc. Students write questions they have on Post-it Notes as readers for discussion and clarification to make meaning. Teachers can model during small group reading session then students can use as a life long reading strategy to keep the reading process active and engaging with Post-it Notes.
Instructions:
Step 1: Select appropriate non-fiction, expository text for students to read. Demonstrate for students that while reading, we want their thinking to be active to learn information by using the strategy New/Knew/Q
Step 2: Demonstrate for students while reading a designated section of text how as a reader you can mark within the text information that was new to you by writing new on the small Post-it Note and placing it within the text. Model how when reading you came across information you already knew so you wrote knew on the Post-it Note and placed on the page within the text.
Step 3: Demonstrate that as readers we often think of questions we want answered as we read. Model how to use Post-it Notes to record questions about the text and place Post-it Notes within the text when the question was thought about.
Step 4: Fostering this strategy and modeling it for young readers will make it a life long reading strategy and promote comprehension monitoring and ease for students in making meaning of expository text.
Afterwards:
Objective: Students will be active thinkers while reading by marking the text with Post-it Notes for information they are reading that is new to them, information they already know and questions they think of while reading
