Description:
I use Post-it® Notes to cover words on charts that are read. I do not usually cover the word completely leaving the first letter visible that students have a prompt or clue. Students read the text and try to decide what the word might be that is covered up that begins with the letter(s) left uncovered. They of course need to use the context clues to give appropriate guesses. If students come up with multiple guesses that could work, we can layer over the original with Post-it Notes that have their words on them that make sense also. Chilren love the guessing game and love to come up with other words that work.
Instructions:
Step 1: Chart with text that is appropriate for the students' reading level. It could be plain text or poetry. Print must be large enough for all students to see and read in a small group/large group. Text may be written on chart paper by teacher. It could even be student generated stories or text. Text must also include words in which students may rely upon contextual clues to guess what they might be.
Step 2: Cover words to be guessed with Post-it Notes. If the note is too large it may be cut to fit the word. You may leave a letter/letters showing that help students narrow the possible choice.
Step 3: Students read the text aloud trying to guess the appropriate word choice for the hidden word. Students should be reminded that more than one word might make a good choice for that sentence.
Step 4: After the student(s) have guessed the appropriate word(s), you might allow them to think up other good word choices that could work as well or better than the hidden word (Use Post-it Notes to layer over the hidden words). This also helps them to think about word choice when they are writing.
Step 5: Reread the text or have students help reread the text with the hidden words revealed or the word choices that they have suggested instead.
