Materials Needed: Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 3 x 3

Materials Needed:

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 3 x 3

Description:

On Post-it® Notes, I write every letter of the alphabet. I hide them all over the room (on the walls and windows, under tables and chairs). The children are then instructed to search the room for the missing letters, and bring them back to our circle time area. Together, we put the alphabet back together. Often, I couple this activity with a reading of the story, “The Letters Are Lost” by Lisa Campbell Ernst. We then play with the letters, making our names, word families, etc.

Instructions:

Step 1: Create a full alphabet on Post-it Notes. I often make extra letters for follow-up activities.

Step 2: Hide letters around the room.

Step 3: Have children go on a letter hunt!

Step 4: Assemble the found letters into a full alphabet together.

Step 5: Play with the letters to form words, names, and word families.

Afterwards:

Objective: Learning the alphabet, sequence, and having fun!

Lesson Extensions: Creating words together, looking at beginning, middle and ends of words, left to right progression, phonics play and fun.

Supporting All Learners: Young children need the ability to move around often. Allowing them to work together cooperatively to accomplish a goal is a fun and beneficial activity.

Assignment/Home Connection: It is easy to create a set for each child to bring home and share with family members. Children can create their own sets, also!
