Description:
Place Post-it® Notes over strategic words in the text. Use context clues to figure the covered word out.
Instructions:
Step 1: Find words in a Big Book text that you want your focus to be on and cover them with Post-it Notes.
Step 2: Gather in a large group and talk about previous reading startegies that we have learned to figure out words in a story.
Step 3: Introduce that using the other words in a sentence to figure out a word is another strategy to use.
Step 4: Start reading the story and say blank when you get to a covered word. Start talking about what the word could be and write the ideas on the Post-it Note. Each time rereading the sentence and inserting the guessed words.
Step 5: After a short discussion uncover the word and see if they were correct.
Step 6: Continue on with the story and repeating when you come to a covered word.
Afterwards:
Objective: The student will be able to use the context clues adn basic inference skills to read words in a text. The student will apply this skill in their reading toolbox.
Lesson Extensions: Give each student smaller Post-it Notes to use in their own texts and then switch with a pattern to try and figure out covered words.
Supporting All Learners: This activity is great for the audio and visual type learner.
