Description:

Whether it is when I grade student papers or students help one another by giving positive and critical feedback to their colleagues, we use Post-it® Notes instead of the dreaded red pen to offer our comments. The author of the original paper still gets to be the decision maker about their work and can use or discard the suggestions offered!

Instructions:

Step 1: After the original draft of any text has been written, the students contact a colleague to assist them in revising and editing their work.

Step 2: The colleague reads through the text to get an overall flavor of the writing piece.

Step 3: Then the colleague uses Post-it Notes to offer praise or ways to improve the writing. The notes are stuck all over the work.

Step 4: The author goes back through their writing and decides if they want to alter their writing based on the suggestions made on the Post-it Notes.

Afterwards:

Objective: SWBAT improve writing by giving and recieving critical feedback on writing assignments using Post-it Notes.

Lesson Extensions: Can also be used during guided writing lessons where the students work together to improve a given text!

Supporting All Learners: All learners can use this idea from the emergent writer to the more advanced student.

Assignment/Home Connection: They can self revise and edit prior to the in class activity.
