Description:
After teaching vowels for two weeks, I divide the class into five groups. I give each child a standard-sized Post-it® Note and ask them to draw a picture of a word that begins with A, E, I, O, or U. I tell them the Post-it Note is their ticket out of class that day. As they leave, they place their ‘ticket’ under the corresponding letter on a foam core board.
I repeat this method after teaching numbers, consonants, or animal classifications.
Instructions:
Step 1: Set up a blank foam core display board with five sections, labeled, A, E, I, O, and U.
Step 2: With 5-10 minutes left in the school day, divide class into five groups and assign each groups a vowel.
Step 3: Give each child a 'ticket' (Post-it Note) and request that they draw a picture of a word that starts with their group's assigned vowel.
Step 4: Each child must place their 'ticket' in the corresponding section of the display board on their way out of class.
Afterwards:
Objective: To learn the short/long vowel sounds and recall words that start with those sounds.
Lesson Extensions: Prior to having each child draw pictures on his/her own, give each group a chart-sized Post-it Note and ask them to work together to come up with illustrations.
Supporting All Learners: Writing the word is optional for higher students. Illustrations suffice for lower.
Assignment/Home Connection: Have papers with A, E, I, O, and U distributed. Each child's homework is to find magazine/newspaper or environmental print pictures that correspond with the letter on their paper. They cut out the pictures, glue on the paper, and share their results with the class the next day, attaching their papers to the display board using a Scotch® Glue Stick.
