Materials Needed:
- Post-it® Notes 1 1/2 x 2
- Canary Yellow (653)
- microscopes
- diagram of a microscope
Description:
Students will use Post-it® Notes to label the parts of a microscope.
Instructions:
Step 1: Help students label a paper copy of a microscope. Teach them the parts of a microscope and what they do.
Step 2: Students get in groups and write the names of the parts of a microscope on Post-it Notes. Students label the microscope with the Post-it Notes putting the name on the appropriate part.
Step 3: The teacher checks the student labeled microscopes. Once they have finished labeling one, they can obtain another microscope and label it (assuming that there are different types in the classroom).
Afterwards:
Objective: Students will learn how to use a microscope.
Lesson Extensions: In the cells unit students will use the microscope to look at plant cells and cheek cells.
Supporting All Learners: This is a hands on activity where students learn how to use a microscope and learn what the parts are and how they work. Struggling students will have groups to help them and this activity is great for english language learners because it focuses on language and has real life connections. Higher ability students can compare many different types of microscopes through this activity.
Assignment/Home Connection: Students can bring in an object they might want to see under a microscope. (Not all of the objects they bring in will work. This however leads to a big discussion on why)
