Do You Know Cause and Effect?

Materials Needed: Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 4 x 4, Rec. Natures Hues 3 Pads (675-3SSNRP)

Description:

Students will work in large and small groups to determine the cause and the effect relationships in sentences.

Instructions:

Step 1: Activate Prior Knowledge with a KWL on Cause and Effect

Step 2: Model and teach Cause and Effect using a powerpoint or video clip that includes large group practice activity on labeling the cause and the effect in a sentence. Students in higher grades will take notes and complete the L section of their KWL chart.

Step 3: Small group practice: Students work in groups of four to write four effects on on Post-it® Note (1, 2, 3, 4). On the next Post-it Note the students write the causes with a blank to put the effect. The group then presents their Post-it Notes and have their classmates match the appropriate cause with the effect. The lower grades and use pictures with scaffolding from the teacher.

Step 4: Students write a journal entry on What I Have Learned.

Afterwards:

Objective: Students will learn how to analyze and determine the text structure of cause and effect.

Lesson Extensions: Students can read informational text to find causes and effects and present their findings to the class.

Supporting All Learners: Large group and small group engagement.

Assignment/Home Connection: Student can reflect on their own life experiences and write several cause and effect sentences to demonstrate their understanding.
