Description:
Vocabulary is introduced at the beginning of each story in our Literature book. Students learn by repetition and seeing the word used in context. Students write the vocabulary word on a Post-it® Note and then stick the note on their desk. While reading the story, the students then listen and watch for the word(s). When the word is read, the student attaches the Post-it Note to the edge of the page even to where the word is found. Then after the story is completed, the words have been marked and the students can then go back and complete the vocabulary assignment, not having to waste learning time trying to find the word in context. This procedure can be used at all grade levels in all subject areas. Younger students may have to use a larger Post-it Note to accommodate the size of their printing on the note.
This activity can also be used to find answers to questions, parts of stories, finding examples of figurative language in stories, important dates, etc. Having to write what they are looking for on the Post-it Note prior to the activity helps to alert the brain to the purpose of the lesson. Various colors of notes can mark the different parts of a story, character traits can be distinguished by specific colors for specific characters. Steps in procedures for Science, etc. can be numbered on individual post-it notes and then placed in the text as a study guide.
Instructions:
Step 1: Depending on the subject, students will write a vocabulary word on a Post-it Note - size of paper depends on the age of the student.
Step 2: As story is read, students will stick the note next to the line that they find the word in context with the Post-it Note sticking out of the book.
Step 3: Students then will have the vocabulary marked once the story has been completed and the student will be able to go back and find the word and complete any assignment that is given.

Objective: The educational goal will depend on the specific lesson. This format will help the student stay focused on the lesson, be prepared for further activities and allow the students to have ownership in their learning.
