Description:
Give the children Post-it® Notes with the vocabulary words on them, and have the definitions already placed on the wall. Give them a time limit to post the correct vocabulary word next to its definition. They love playing it as a competition game. You can use this game in all subject areas. You could modify it for all grade levels, for example with younger students, you could have them match pictures to words, and with older students, have them even match parts of speech to the words.
Instructions:
Step 1: Divide students into teams. Give students words on Post-it Notes. Have the definitions already placed on the wall or closet doors.
Step 2: Have students place words next to correct definitions. Play game like a relay race.
Step 3: The first team to correctly place all of the words next to their definitions win the game.
Step 4: Change up words each time. You can use this for all subject areas.
Afterwards:
Objective: The students will identify the correct definition for words given.
Lesson Extensions: In math, students can match products, quotients, sums, and difference with number sentences. This game can be modified in all subject areas.
Supporting All Learners: This game can be modified for all, using beginning sounds, pictures, syllables, etc. You may also use this for story mapping, etc. The students love playing it!
Assignment/Home Connection: Students can play this game at home with parents.
