Description:

During reading instruction I place picture cards on the table. We write letters on Post-it® Notes and students must identify the picture word then add the letter on the Post-it Note which is the initial sound for that picture.

Instructions:

Step 1: Get various picture cards for letters/sounds the class has studied. Say the name of each picture.

Step 2: Ask students what the initial sound for that picture word is.

Step 3: Have students write the letter which has the same initial sound as the picture.

Step 4: Have students place their letter on the correct picture that has that initial sound.

Afterwards:

Objective: TSW be able to recognize letter names/initial sounds in words.

Lesson Extensions: You can place picture cards on the table in random order. Ask students to find the picture with a specific initial sound and place the letter written on the Post-it Note on the picture card.

Supporting All Learners: Yes

Assignment/Home Connection: Suggest that parents can do this activity at home with their children but instead of using picture cards they may just name an object in their home and have student write the letter which has the initial sound of the object on their post it note and place on the object.
