Materials Needed:

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 2 x 2
  • Canary Yellow (622-10SSCY)
  • Digital Cameria and software
  • Moviemaker software
  • sharpie/marker
  • clean wall or whiteboard

Description:

Using Post-it® Notes and stop motion animation, support learning of spelling, vocabulary and root words through the use of stop motion animation. Details and a sample of this activity that I completed in class can be found at: http://yoursmarticles.blogspot.com/2009/07/possible-projects-with-post-it-motion.html

Instructions:

Step 1: Identify a word for students to work with. Write each letter of the word on an individual Post-it Note. Stick each Post-it Note on a clean space on a wall. Take a photograph with a camera (preferably mounted on a tri-pod).

Step 2: Begin moving Post-it Notes out of the main word to form other words. Take a photograph as you inch each Post-it Note along to create a new word.

Step 3: Upload photos onto a computer. Insert all photos into Windows Movie Maker to create a stop-motion show.

Step 4: If you want, explore .mp3 or .wav files to insert into the video file.

Afterwards:

Objective: Student will explore and evaluate vocabulary to find root words and word patterns. Students will also utilize technology to support their learning.

Lesson Extensions: Videos can be compiled and shared with class to show a multitude of words and their word patterns.

Supporting All Learners: Working as collaborative groups, students will scaffold one another in the exploration of words for word roots and patterns.

Assignment/Home Connection: Upload your video into a Web 2.0 collaborative video sharing source such as YouTube.
