Description:

I use one Post-it Note with a + sign on it and one with an = sign on it in the middle. I allow the children to pull different manipulatives to place in between. It gives them a great visual of an addition fact. Although this may seem small the kids LOVE to do it. It’s quick and easy, but makes a huge impact. This is a great activity for parent volunteers to do with students’ one on one.

May also be modified for subtraction, division, and multiplication.

Instructions:

Step 1: Take two Post-it Notes. Place a = sign on 1 and a + on the other.

Step 2: Lay them out on a folder or piece of paper in the correct order.

Step 3: Place various manipulatives in different amounts in between the + sign.

Step 4: Have students use manipulatives to answer the math questions.

Step 5: Watch the mental math growth!

Afterwards:

Objective: For students to see examples of what addition truly means by using real life examples. (ice cream manipulatives, bears, blocks, etc.)

Lesson Extensions: addition, multiplication, or division.

Supporting All Learners: This is a great lesson that can be made as easy or as hard as you would like. Simply add or take away manipulatives.

Assignment/Home Connection: Post-it Notes can be moved easily and placed anywhere for an easy pick up and go lesson.
