Materials Needed:

  • Post-it® Super Sticky Notes 2 x 2
  • sheet of paper for each student

Description:

This lesson is designed to teach academic language to ESL students and students who simply need to increase their academic language.

Instructions:

Step 1: Students receive a sheet of paper that has a box on top. This box is used as a Word Bank for key vocabulary.

Step 2: Students write and draw key vocabulary on each Post-it® Note and place these notes in the Word Bank.

Step 3: Underneath it are sentence frames with blank lines where students can stick the key vocabulary in the appropriate blank lines to complete sentences that emphasize academic language acquisition.

Step 4: Then, they take turns reading these sentences out loud with a partner.

Step 5: Many times I write the sentences in a dialogue format to help them increase their oral language skills.

Afterwards:

Objective: To increase academic language skills through connecting key vocabulary with complex English language grammatical forms. This activity will increase English language acquistion for English learners who have a first language other than English. Also, it will increase academic vocabulary and language for all students at any grade level.

Lesson Extensions: I have my students collect these English Language Development sheets in a binder. I build on this activity by increasing the complexity of the key vocabulary and the structured grammatical sentence frames. Therefore, you can use this activity to extend vocabulary, grammatical forms, increasingly more difficult verb tenses, concepts etc.

Supporting All Learners: This activity can be adjusted to any grade level and used for any subject matter. It provide hands on support for all types of learners. This activity is one that should be included in all curriculum that focuses on language acquistition.

Assignment/Home Connection: My students take their folder home each night and choose one family to participate with them in these structured dialogues.
