Description:
Students will be able to use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes on a K-W-L chart by activating prior knowledge, to what they want to learn, and what they have learned on the topic of rocks.
Instructions:
Step 1: The teacher will activate prior knowledge on the topic of rocks, using open-ended questions to stimulate involvement, and keep the students focused on the topic using a K-W-L Chart. The teacher should assign students to bring two or three rocks to school before starting this lesson.
Step 2: The teacher makes three columns on the board and using three different color large Post-it® Super Sticky Notes. A yellow Post-it® Super Sticky Note would be for the “What We Know about Rocks” column, the blue Post-it® Super Sticky Note for the “Want We Want to Know about Rocks” column and the green Post-it® Super Sticky note for “What We Learned about Rocks”.
Step 3: The teacher will brainstorm with the students what they already know about rocks and what do they want to learn about rocks. In a group, students and teacher discuss rocks and use a Post-it® Super Sticky Note to label where they were found. Student’s place their rocks on selected tables and are given time to examine various shapes and sizes of all the rocks.
Step 4: The students begin working first in their groups of three or four and then independently with their own color pad of Post-it® Super Sticky Notes and Post-it® Easel Pad to place the K-W-L chart. The students will then use the color Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to make references as they work independently.
Step 5: As they read a text on Rocks and prove the information in the What We Think We Know (K) column, the students should number the page on the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes. The students find answers to the questions they asked in the What We Want to Know (W) column. The students will complete their own K-W-L chart and present the information during group discussion. The teacher should discuss and write the classes answers in the What We Learned (L) column with Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.
Afterwards:
Lesson Extensions: Have copies of the K-W-L chart and pad of Post-it® Super Sticky Notes available in the classroom for the students. The students can use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes for sorting rocks according to texture, labeling them for color, and comparing the weights. The teacher can have the class explore the school surroundings for rocks. The Post-it® Notes can even be used to name the different types of rocks. Types of igneous rock can be put under \"Igneous\", types of metamorphic rock can be put under \"metamorphic:\" etc....
Supporting All Learners: Model a question if you think they might have trouble coming up with there own. Fill in part of the chart with the more difficult answers.
Assignment/Home Connection: Have students practice this strategy at home using a K-W-L chart and Post-it® Super Sticky Notes before and after they read any article on rocks. The student can fill in the chart using the same process they learned in school.
