Description:

Students use a text-to-world connection chart to understand the connection between a text they’re reading and the world around them.

Instructions:

Step 1: Explain that Text-to-World connection is when “good readers not only make connections to themselves and other texts, but connections to the world around us."

Step 2: Explain that the purpose of Text-To-World connections is to help students understand and comprehend a text more effectively and activate their prior knowledge.

Step 3: Remind the students to think how the information they are reading connects to other texts such as newspapers, books on culture, or books on the world topics.

Step 4: Have students choose a text to read or give students a text to read. Model filling out the Post-it® Note Text-To-World chart by writing the titles of the book or articles under each category on the board with Post-it® Super Sticky notes.

Step 5: Hand out Post-it® Note Text-To-World Connection graphic organizers with Post-It® Super Sticky notes and have students fill-out the chart as they read. Students will place a Post-it® Super Sticky Note with their connection under either one of the two categories: I read it in this text……and …This is similar to...

Afterwards:

Objective: Students will understand the text through the use of text-to-world connections with Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.

Evaluate The Activity: Did I give the students enough time to discuss their connections? Review if the students made the connection to the text they read.

Lesson Extensions: Use test-to-world connections from a newspaper or magazine. Give students the Post-it® Note Text-to-World organizer with Post-it® Super Sticky notes and assigned the task of making connections while reading text in another subject area.

Supporting All Learners: Students that have a problem writing in the Post-it® Note Text-to-World chart can draw a picture instead to show the connection. Students can work in pairs to complete the chart.

Assignment/Home Connection: Assign students to read about a country of their choosing, making connections, and writing them down on the Post-it® Note Text-to World chart using Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.
